The Wellness Model
The Six Dimensions of Life

Wellness: The pursuit of optimal functioning in all aspects of one's life. The Wellness Model identifies and encourages optimal functioning in the six dimensions of life: emotional; intellectual; physical; social; spiritual; and vocational. The Wellness Model encourages all people to pursue their personal development with some balance in mind.

Emotional Dimension: This dimension emphasizes awareness and acceptance of feelings. Emotional wellness indicates the degree to which individuals feel positive and enthusiastic about themselves and their lives. It includes the capacity to appropriately control feelings and related behaviors, including realistic assessment of one's limitations, development of autonomy, and ability to cope effectively with stress. The emotionally well person maintains satisfying relationships with others.

Intellectual Dimension: This dimension encourages the development of intellectual capacities to their fullest, and the use of resources available to expand knowledge. Intellectual wellness also includes expanding the potential for sharing with others. An intellectually well person uses the intellectual and cultural activities within and outside the classroom, combined with the human and learning resources available within the college and the larger community.

Physical Dimension: This dimension encourages  cardiovascular flexibility and strength, and also encourages regular physical activity. Physical wellness includes increasing knowledge about food and nutrition, and discourages use of tobacco, drugs, and excessive alcohol consumption. It promotes activities that contribute to high-level wellness, including medical self-care (i.e., "safer sex," self-examinations, proper nutrition, etc.) and appropriate use of the medical system.

Social Dimension: This dimension encourages contributing to our human and physical environment for the common welfare of our community. It emphasizes the interdependence with others and nature, and encourages positive contributions to society. Social wellness includes moving beyond a personal outlook to a more global worldview.

Spiritual Dimension: This dimension involves seeking meaning and purpose in human existence. It includes the development of a deep appreciation for the depth and expanse of life and natural forces that exist in the universe. The Spiritual Dimension also encourages people to look within themselves to what some refer to as the spirit. It involves getting in touch with one's innermost self--that part of an individual that contains his/her values and creative self...the truest essence of the individual.

Vocational Dimension: This dimension encourages preparing for work in which individuals will gain personal satisfaction and find enrichment in their lives. Vocational development is related to one's attitude about his or her work.
