Math Placement Exams

A number of majors at SUNY Oswego require a math course in addition to the general education requirement. These majors require all students to take a math placement exam at orientation. 

Below is a list of majors requiring a specific math course:

  • Adolescence Education: (All Math or Science Concentrates)
  • Applied Mathematical Economics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Business Administration
  • Chemistry
  • Childhood Education: Math Concentrates
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Finance
  • Geochemistry
  • Geology
  • Human Resource Management
  • Management Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Mathematics
  • Meteorology
  • Operations Management and Information Systems
  • Physics
  • Pre-Health Programs
  • Public Accounting
  • Risk Management Insurance
  • Software Engineering
  • Technology Management
  • Vocational Teacher Preparation (VTP): Business and Marketing Education majors
  • Zoology

Undeclared Students: Undeclared students considering one of the majors above will need to take the math placement exam as well and should email with your anticipated major, name, ID and orientation sessions you have reserved so we can send you information about the exam and check in.

If you do not see your major listed above, there is no additional math requirement beyond the general education requirement, and you are not required to take the math placement exam.

The exam administered at Orientation is Accuplacer, an online computer-adaptive test. The exam results will be used to verify your pre-registered courses for the following semester.
