OK, you made it through your first year at Oswego! There was undoubtedly
much to learn and many new things to do. Avoid the "sophomore slump." Often,
graduates look back and relate that their sophomore year was a tough one. The
academics got tougher, and they lacked a goal after college to keep them
focused. Well, we appreciate thatÉÉÉand would like to help with the
solution.
Goal #1 I have no future career goal in mind
Having a future career goal figured out by now works well for some students.
If not, trust us, you have good company. Sophomores often need the same
self-assessment suggested for first-year students.
Goal # 2 I have some career goals in mind
If you have your major secured and you enjoy it, that's great! Now is a
great time to explore how you'll use it in the future.
explore at least 3 career options available to you through your major or the
majors you are considering.
obtain an internship or field experience through the Experience-Based
Education Office, 142 Campus Center, Compass.
attend on-campus career/job fairs and employer information sessions that
relate to your interests
learn about possible career fields in the Career Library
consider obtaining a summer, and/or school-break job that relates to your
interests
Goal #3 What else could I do to enhance my future success? Enhance Your
Resume and Professional Connections
take on more responsibilities in worthwhile extracurricular activities
review your progress in learning four (or more) skills employers look for in
new hires
make a special effort to get to know 1 or 2 professors on a personal
basis
attend campus alumni/ae programs
identify organizations and associations in your interest areas for shadowing
opportunities and informational interviews
learn about and possibly join as least one professional organization related
to your major in order to make contact with and learn from people in the
professional world.
