CAREER SERVICES

Life... a series of steps.

You made it to your junior year and can see the end in sight! This section is designed to give you a quick review of what you should consider thiking about and doing during your junion year and related Career Services resources

Assumptions: You have declared a major and may be starting to wonder what you can do with it and how it all relates to your interst and goals. You may have already begun to be involved in extracurricular activities that relate to your major.


Goal #1 Obtain valuable knowledge related to your interests and education

Activities:

  • Complete at least five information interviews in careers you want to explore find out more about career opportunities related to your major
  • attend on-campus career and job fairs and employer information sessions that relate to your interest
  • begin to figure out what is really important to you - (ie. your values, educational goals, geographic preferences)
  • think seriously about your future plans
  • research potential organizations in the career library and talk to recent graduates in your major about the job market and potential employers
  • talk with employed professionals to find out what their jobs are like and what they look for when hiring someone new
  • participate in career services combo seminar to learn about the most important job search strategy - networking


Goal # 2 Obtain valuable experience related to your interests and education

Activities:

  • shadow several professionals in your field
  • narrow your career interest areas
  • add a double major, minor or concentration in another field to strengthen your career preparation
  • review your progress in learning four (or more) skills employers look for in new hires
  • obtain an internship or other practical career experience
  • obtain or continue leadership activities in student organizations
  • practice your interviewing skills during a mock interview

Goal #3 Begin to prepare documents that you will need to apply for jobs & graduate study

Activities:

  • ask former employers and professors to serve as reference or to write letters recommendation
  • schedule an appointment with a career counselor or drop in to have your updated resume critiqued

Goal #4 If you will be attending graduate or professional school

Activities:

  • read "Graduate School Timeline" handout in office
  • consider graduate school and get information on graduate entrance examinations
  • start writing for applications to graduate school and other pertinent information
  • read current Peterson's Graduate School catalogs in the Career Library
  • continue to build your professional wardrobe
