We're pleased that you have found us, either by chance or because someone
recommended that you investigate this very popular website. Maybe you are the
first person in your family to attend college. Possibly, you might still be
searching for a major that's right for you. Maybe you are looking for some help
in deciding which career fields that will be right for you. Maybe you're just
curious. Maybe you are all of the above. Maybe you'd like to have a job offer
before you graduate. As you become part of the Oswego State community, you'll
want to make the most of your four years here. Statistically, you are more
liable to graduate on time and have a job waiting for you if you plan to follow
these suggestions. So if you're ready to be successful at Oswego, we know we
can help!
Goal #1 I am unsure of my major and/or career
If this sounds like you, start here. (If your career goals seem clear at
this time, please skip to #2)
Activities:
- Meet with the a peer advisor at career services to find out what we have to
offer.
- Explore our Career Folders. You can flip through hundreds of articles and
brochures describing career fields, and they're categorized to fit your
interests.
- Arrange to use the DISCOVER software program.
- Here you'll complete questionnaires and the results of these will help you
explore jobs and careers that may be right for you. We call this
self-assessment. Find out how your unique combination of interests and
abilities can be connected to a future career.
- Take a career interest survey. We offer the Harrington-O'Shea.
- Explore the Volunteer and Community Services Office. Volunteering is a
great way to get job-related experience.
- Consider taking the GST 101 course, called Career Awareness. This class
will provide you with an opportunity to get college credit while getting 6 hour
of experience each week.
- Check out our "Career Encyclopedias." These are general books that describe
lots of career fields in enough detail to help you choose.
Goal # 2 I have some career ideas
Activities:
- consider volunteer positions to help build your resume
- look up your career field of interest on DISCOVER, our career guidance
software. Find out what you'll education you'll need to enter your field of
choice.
- collect information on internships, co-ops, and summer jobs that are
available through the EBE, 142 Campus Center, Compass.
- join campus organizations that will offer you leadership roles in the
future
- attend on-campus career and job fairs to gather information on potential
careers and employers
- leaf through the career-specific books in the career library
- identify at least four skills employers want and plan how you will acquire
these skills before graduation.
- VISIT CAREER SERVICES as soon as possible. We have many good resource
books
