Public Relations Specialist

The Compass is currently seeking five Public Relations Interns
for the 2008-09 academic year.

Summary: This internship is an on-campus opportunity to enhance skills and gain experience in public speaking, computer applications, media relations, event management, and employer/community relations.

We are also seeking one intern to specialize in digital media content creation (youtube, campus center display boards, etc.)  Working knowledge of digital camera, camcorder, and Director's toolkit a major plus)

Hours: 10 hours per week for entire academic year, earning three upper-division credits per semester (Six total).

Major Responsibilities

• Media Relations - establish & utilize relationships with campus & local print, broadcast, and web media;
• Inform and motivate students to participate in on-campus recruiting;
• Develop, timeline, and implement promotional campaigns for major campus-wide events (multiple career fairs, etiquette dinners, community outreach activities, workshops/program, etc.);
• Utilize and improve writing skills through composition of media articles and press releases for the office;
• design brochures, flyers, table tents, handouts and other promotional materials as needed;
• research and propose purchases of theme-based products for promotional purchases;
• Bulletin board creation and maintenance;
• Maintain communications log;
• Build a professional portfolio;
• Establish and maintain personal and electronic contacts with faculty & department secretaries;
• Conduct workshops on various topics for clubs, residence hall programming efforts and other constituents;
• Work cooperatively with Navigator staff to coordinate publicity for events;
• Become familiar with and adhere to the operations and procedures of a professional office;
• Become familiar with various software applications including desktop publishing, presentation and word applications;
• Assist with Manhattan alumni career panel and related events.

Requirements:
• Junior/Senior class standing in 2008-2009. (Internships are credit-bearing, therefore, applicants who have attended Oswego since freshman year must be at least junior standing in credit hours (60) by Fall semester 2008; applicants who transferred to Oswego must have accumulated 30 credit hours at Oswego State by Fall semester 2008);
• Must be able commit two (Fall and Spring) semesters to the internship;
• Committed to fulfill all internship requirements. Time requirements are 10 hours per week; -Minimum 2.5 GPA at time of application;
• Must be available to return to college about two days early each semester for training (Dates TBA) and participate in a pre-internship orientation during the prior spring semester.
