Compass Navigator Job Description

Hours: 8-10 hours per week Full academic year commitment, 3-credit course each semester – (GST 303/305)

Description: The Compass Navigator is responsible for becoming familiar with the programs, resources and functions of the Compass. The Compass Navigator will work with other staff members to provide a welcoming office environment that offers students diverse opportunities to engage in their educational planning process during every stage of their academic career.

Tasks: Greet and assist all visitors to the Compass Resource Center with the basic functions, such as: Starting a resume and initialize a job/graduate school search Personality and Career Exploration Software Internship database search Search for Service Opportunities in the Community Registration for workshops, mock interviews, and special events Be able to articulate Compass programs, services, resources & opportunities Be able to articulate Compass departments and their functions Identify student’s presenting questions Connect students with appropriate services, information or programs Educate students about the educational planning process Refer students to most appropriate staff for follow up or specialized services Assist with and participate in workshops, programs, and presentations Research and specialize in a specific area of educational planning Areas could include, special training in: 1-2 Undeclared/ Major Exploration 1 Transfer Services 1 First Year Programs 3-5 Career Development (including post-graduation opportunities) 1 Experiential Learning (internships) 1 Service Learning 1 Full-time volunteer opportunities Other duties as assigned

Skills: Required Ability to develop supportive interactions with other students, both one-on-one and within groups Ability to work independently as well as within a team-oriented environment Ability to synthesize significant amounts of information about various aspects of Compass departments and articulate to students/alumni in clear and meaningful manner Requirements Must intend to hold the Compass Navigator position for the full academic year Minimum 2.5 GPA at time of application

Hours Required: The Compass Resource Center will be open from 9-4:30pm everyday, as well as, evening hours on Tuesday and Wednesday until 7pm. Resource Center Coverage: Compass Navigators will be scheduled to cover 8-10 hours in the resource center each week. Ideally, there will be at least one student scheduled from 9-4:30 everyday and two students will be scheduled to cover high traffic times and evening hours. Navigators may be given additional tasks to complete if Resource Room traffic is slow. Specialization/Project Hours Compass Navigators will be expected to work on projects and research in their specialization area when Resource Room traffic is slow. Training Requirements: Students will attend all scheduled class meetings to stay informed of the Compass activities and information. Students will attend a pre-training session in the spring semester prior to when the position begins in the fall. During this pre-training students will be given an overview of all Compass departments and will choose a specialty area of interest.

Supervisor: One or two professionals working and a Graduate Assistant working as a team will supervise students and provide class structure. Guest speakers from each Compass area will provide training to Compass Navigators during class meetings.
