CAREER SERVICES

A lifetime of service...

Our department prides itself in high quality service to alumni. Graduates of SUNY Oswego are welcome to contact the office regarding either a telephone or in-person appointment. Some of the services that alumni often take advantage are: job vacancies, resume critiques, job search advisement, career change/career counseling, and self -assessment via the DISCOVER program.

Review Graduate Survey Results

Fill out our Graduate Survey! Want to find out what other alumni are doing with their careers? We have information on where they are working, their positions and salary data.

Complete our graduate survey form so we can include your information in our publications.

Career Counseling Appointments and Walk-In Hours

These 30 or 60 minute sessions can be conducted either in person or on the phone to discuss any career related concerns you may have. (If it is a phone appointment, we ask that you call us.) We will assist you in any stage of career development: self-assessment, career exploration, and job/graduate school search. During counseling sessions you are welcome to take self-assessment inventories to identify your strengths, interests, and abilities. You can also sign up to use the DISCOVER program in our office, which assists you in learning about yourself and the world of work. We can assist you with identifying what careers are out there that fit your unique set of education, experience, skills and abilities. Through our professional staff and Peer Assistants, you are able to drop by at any time we are open, year round, for quick questions and resume critiques.

Vacancy Posting Service

Our office receives a great many job vacancies every day. We compile these vacancies by career field and make them available at no charge to students and alumni who walk in and ask for them. We also post these vacancies to our web site for your convenience.

Credentials File Service

We would be happy to start a file for you in our office. This is used to maintain letters of recommendation for your convenience. There is a nominal fee for the postage. You can get more details on this service on our credentials site

Resume and Cover Letter Critiques

You are welcome to have your resume and cover letter checked during a phone or personal appointment. We will give you helpful pointers to make these important documents more marketable. If you are away from Oswego, you may fax them to us at 315-312-5443 or mail them to us at: Career Services, 142 Campus Center, SUNY @ Oswego, Oswego, NY 13126. Feel free to email us a copy as well and we'll get it back to you as soon as we can.

Resource Room

We also have an extensive library of directories, job listings, books, journals and other resources that will assist you in your career development. Also, the Career Services Office is open on Wednesdays while classes are in session from 9:00am-4:30pm.

Mock Interviews

Students and alumni may take advantage of video-taped practice interviews. Make an appointment with a career counselor, bring your resume and come dressed for an interview. The actual interview will only take part of the time and the rest of the time is spent reviewing the tape for helpful feedback. Feel free to bring your own tape so you can review it again at a later date.

Resume Lab

We have several computers available for students and alumni to create and print out resumes and cover letters. We would be happy to assist you in the technical aspects of using the software (Microsoft Word) as well as formatting your resume. These computers are by reservation only, so be sure to contact our office prior to dropping by so you'll know a computer is available. If you wish, we have a resume package available for you to purchase which includes a disk and a certain number of printed copies.

Handouts

The Career Services Office has a number of handouts that we make available free to our alumni. These include: How to Write a Persuasive Resume and Cover Letter, Job Search Correspondence, How to Interview Well, Graduate and Professional School, Informational Interviewing, Sources of Job Vacancies, How to Work a Job Fair, and many others. All of these handouts are available on our Web site.
