Presenters/Panelists:

David Horacek, Primary affiliation: Department of Philosophy, SUNY Oswego

John Hartung, Primary affiliation: Department of Philosophy, Lemoyne College

David Lu, Primary affiliation: Department of Philosophy, Syracuse University

The presenters will discuss high-level strategies for the creation of immersive fictions. While effective storytelling cannot be reduced to a formula, this panel will introduce thee distinct approaches for producing the content of fictional stories. These approaches can loosely be described as: World-first, Moral/Concept-first and Storyarch-first. While it is typically a hybrid of these three approaches that produces successful fictions, most lean more heavily on one at the expense of the rest. The panel will consider and categorize famous exemplars, and focus on practical suggestions for applying these strategies to the creation of game campaigns and other narratives.

The workshop will be set up to include audience participation in story brainstorming, a reading of passages from "Their Own Tails" (tentative title), a short story by Horacek and Lu that explores some odd problems that are encountered by time travelers.

The only slots that are "booked" so to speak are slots 4 and 5 for a video game tournaments and Slot 7 for X-Strike Studios' panel.

Thank you.
