Research Experiences in Meteorology, an Integration of Science Mathematics, and Technology

The professors involved in REM-SMT are trying to publish an article concerning the REM-SMT project and how well the objectives of the project were met.  The foundation for the paper has been written, but to get the paper published we need your input.  The following is a questionnaire for which we would appreciate your response.  Please comment on how well the following objectives were met for either you (Questions 1-3) or your students (Questions 4-6).

Name:

School System:

 1. In what way(s) did you find the interaction and cooperation with the meteorology and mathematics college faculty on the research projects to be a positive experience?

2a. Comment on whether you feel as though the project has provided you with the background knowledge and confidence to allow you to initiate and conduct research projects within the classroom.

2b. Do you have any suggestions that might have improved your attainment of that background knowledge?

3a. In what way have you augmented the Earth Science curriculum (or the mathematics) with the research-based science mathematics, and technology? Please be specific.

3b.  If you had access to GARP (GEMPAK Rendering and Analysis Program), in what way have you been able to utilize this software in the classroom? Please be specific.

3c.  Do you have a weather station at the school? Is data being archived? Do you have ideas for projects that students might become actively engaged in using this data?

3d. Do you have BUFKIT on any of your computers? Have you been able to demonstrate some of the features associated with this software package to students? Do any of the students use BUFKIT?

4a.  Were the students able to participate and cooperate with teachers during the 2000-2001 academic year in the research projects that were initiated during the summer of 2000?

4b. Were the same students involved during the 2000-2001 academic year as during the summer of 2000?

4c. If not, were they able to work as peer mentors with other students within the school system who later became involved in the research project initiated by the teachers?

4d. If not, were other students asked to or did other students volunteer to work on the project outside of the classroom or was time given to any class to work on some aspect of the project during classroom hours?

5.Are the students able to apply their knowledge and thinking skills to real-life problems? Please give examples where possible.

6. Comment on how well the students have been able to engage in scientific inquiry.

7. Do you have any other comments concerning the project and how well the teachers and or students were met?
