Great Professional Development Opportunity For High School Teachers

The program is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and SUNY Oswego and requires endorsement from school superintendents.  Teachers will receive 3 graduate credits at the end of a four-week summer program and a stipend of $1200.  Teachers are expected to participate in an academic year follow-up activities for which they will earn an additional stipend of $600.  Each school is expected to choose a team consisting of a science teacher, a mathematics teacher, and two students from either grade 10 or grade 11.  The students will stay in a campus residence hall during the week, supervised by counselors, and return home on the weekends. Tuition, and room and board costs for the students are provided by the grant. Parents or guardians are expected to provide the transportation for the students.  Teachers also have the choice of residing on campus for the 4-week project.  We can provide room, but the teachers are responsible for their own food.  There is access to cooking facilities in the residence halls.

Selection Criteria:  The school selects two teachers and commit to the purchase of a $600.00 piece of meteorology data collecting equipment (or provide the equivalent data collecting capability).  The school and the teachers select the two students.  The participants then complete a registration form provided by the project.

We are currently recruiting teachers for the summer 2003 and will do so until we get eight schools on a first come basis.  Please apply early.  Applications are not due until May 31, 2003, but we have started recruiting and will accept applications at any time.
