May 10, 2013

Dear Editor:

The Oswego State Men’s ACHA D1 hockey team celebrated the end of their season at their annual team dinner at Tavern on the Lock Restaurant in Fulton last month. The Tavern on the Lock has been a generous sponsor of the team for many years.

Besides celebrating the Oswego careers of the graduating seniors, individual awards were handed out after the dinner. Three of the awards are voted on by the players on the team- most valuable player, rookie of the year and most improved player. The Oswego rookie of the year was freshman George Scouras, the most improved player was awarded to sophomore Richie Santini and the most valuable player was senior goaltender Aaron Frohm, who was also the NECHL Player of the Year. Club president Mike Renick received the President’s award and the coach’s award was given to senior Justin Smith.

After the dinner the seniors were presented with their senior gift, a Seiko watch which is custom made with the team’s logo on its face.

The players also voted for new club officers for next year- Matt Brady was elected president, Bobby Drexler is vice president, Dylan Niewiemski is treasurer and Karl Backhaus is club secretary. Off ice personnel who also contribute to the team are Dan Eye and Nick Wojton who broadcast our games live over the web and our game announcer, Rob Chmiel.

The Lakers had 9 seniors on this team and, while we will miss them next year, we wish them well in their chosen careers. We are proud of the fact that our team has a 100% graduation rate.

The Lakers are a D1 ACHA team and a member of the NECHL. They are sponsored by the Student Association of Oswego State University, Tavern on the Lock Restaurant, Bags for Sports, Hockey Stop and Damn Good T-Shirts. The team website, which is managed by player Chris LoBosco, is www.oswego.edu/icehockey.

We would also like to congratulate our fellow Laker hockey players on the NCAA D3 team for their successful season and wish their 14 seniors the best in their futures.

Our future looks very bright. We have had many inquires about our program from prospective players. Of those inquiries, 24 have been accepted to Oswego State so far. Although we will miss our seniors, we are looking toward the future with great anticipation.

Sincerely,

Jay Peacock, Head Coach

Another Season Completed

by Carla Peacock

The Oswego State Men’s ACHA D1 hockey team recently completed its season, advancing to the semi-final game at the NECHL tournament and finishing 4th in the league, out of 10 teams. The league’s annual meeting was held during the Championship Weekend and we are proud to announce that the team received several awards. Senior goaltender Aaron Frohm was placed on the first all-league team and seniors Greg Molfese and Justin Smith received honorable mention honors. Laker coach, Jay Peacock, was voted as the NECHL Coach of the Year. Academic All American honors were awarded to 8 of our juniors and seniors and one freshman received Academic All League recognition.

The NECHL is a D1 ACHA league with 10 member schools-Ithaca, Niagara, Buffalo, St. Bonaventure, RIT, Syracuse, Cornell, Cortland, Binghamton and Ithaca. Canisius will be joining in the fall.

The Player of the Year award is voted on by the coaches of the member teams. We are very pleased and honored to announce that Laker goaltender, Aaron Frohm, was named as the NECHL Player of the Year for 2012-2013. Not only did Aaron have exceptional league stats, he also led the nation in shutouts for 2 months during the season.

There are over 300 hockey players in the NECHL. To be placed on the league’s first, second or honorable mention teams is quite a feat. To be named as the league Player of the Year by the coaches of your peers is a once in a lifetime honor. The coaches said that Aaron is the best player in the league and we totally agree. We are proud that he, along with us, are Lakers. Congratulations.

Oswego Downs RIT

by Nick Wojton, PIO

The Oswego State men’s club ice hockey team defeated the RIT Tigers on Feb. 9 by a score of 4-1, snapping a four-game losing skid and securing a playoff spot in the NECHL playoffs in the process.

In the previous four games leading up to the contest with RIT, goaltender Aaron Frohm needed to, and certainly did, come up big for the Lakers. Despite facing 29 shots from the Tigers, Frohm had a significantly easier night because of a good defensive showing in front of him.

“Our game showed our guys we can dominate,” Oswego State head coach Jay Peacock said.

Offensively, the Lakers struck first on a power play in the first period when Matt Potrzeba fired a shot from the point that caused RIT goaltender Brian Jascur to leave a big rebound for D.J. Mazzoni to jump on, giving Oswego the 1-0 lead. RIT’s lone goal came just moments into the second period when Brendan Domos took a shot through traffic that found the back of the net.

The rest of the second period would remain scoreless but certainly wouldn’t finish without action. The physical contest saw big hits throughout but reached a boiling point when Greg Molfese got into an altercation with Jeff Burrell of RIT. The two players threw several punches and wrestled to the ground before the referees separated the two. Both players were ejected from the game. Richie Santani also took a major penalty for the Lakers when he tripped up an RIT player in the corner and he fell awkwardly into the boards. Even though the Lakers received a five minute penalty to kill off, they escaped it without harm.

“Our defense played really strong,” Peacock said. “We’ve tried to keep teams away from the middle of the ice.”

Despite the strong efforts by outshooting RIT in the first two periods, the Lakers entered the third period still even with the Tigers. Peacock said he gave his team a stern talking to during the second intermission about the lack of goals and the Lakers would only take a few moments into the third period to respond. Laker captain Chris Timmons put in what would be the game-winning goal moments into the third, then Bobby Drexler added an insurance goal giving the Lakers a two-goal lead. Matt Potrzeba would add an empty net goal from his own end as time expired to give the Lakers the 4-1 victory.

With Mazzoni and Timmons scoring, Peacock said he was glad his top line were able to get on the score sheet again. While keeping his top line in place, Peacock shuffled his other lines around and said he was pleased with the results.
“I think the guys responded well,” he said.

The Lakers were also scheduled to face Syracuse University the same weekend but because of the winter storm “Nemo,” Peacock chose to cancel the game.

I was in contact with some of the parents from the Rochester area where the storm was coming from and decided it wouldn’t be safe,” Peacock said.

Due to the cancellation, the Lakers now play away at Syracuse this upcoming Saturday night, in between games already scheduled home games against Niagara at 7 p.m. Friday and the season finale and senior night against Mercyhurst in the Laker Cup on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Senior Weekend at the Campus Center

by Carla Peacock

The Oswego State Men’s ACHA D1 hockey team will celebrate their final home games of the season as they welcome Niagara and Mercyhurst to the Campus Center Arena on Friday and Sunday.

The Lakers will host Niagara University on Friday night at 7:00. Niagara is undefeated in the NECHL and recently clinched the automatic bid to the National Tournament in March. Earlier this month, Oswego lost to the Purple Eagles by 4-1, however the score was only 2-1 going into the third period so this matchup will be very exciting.

Oswego travels to Syracuse University on Saturday for a makeup game which was cancelled last week due to the weather. It is the Orangemen’s senior night and the Lakers hope to be the spoilers.

On Sunday, the Mercyhurst Lakers come to Oswego for the annual “Laker Cup” game. This is the 4th year of this friendly rivalry and the winners of the game receive the Laker Cup trophy which will stay with them until the next game. It is also Senior Night for Oswego as the coaching staff and team will honor their 9 graduating seniors and wish them well in their future. Once again, the team has a 100% graduation rate and this year 5 of the seniors are Academic All Americans. The puck will drop at 2:00 and, as usual, admission is free.

Oswego has earned a berth in the NECHL League Championship Tournament which will take place in Buffalo next weekend.

The Lakers are a D1 ACHA team and a member of the NECHL. They are sponsored by the Student Association of Oswego State University, DamnGood T shirts, Tavern on the Lock Restaurant, Bags for Sports and Hockey Stop.

Lakers Drop A Pair At Home

by Nick Wojton PIO

The Oswego State men’s club ice hockey team dropped back-to-back contests at home this past weekend against a pair of Buffalo schools in the University at Buffalo and Canisius College.

On Feb. 2 the Lakers faced off against Buffalo in a rematch between two teams who played just a week prior on Jan. 26. In their first meeting, Buffalo cruised to a 6-1 win over Oswego but it took Buffalo extra time in a shoot out to defeat Oswego for a second time by a score of 2-1. The struggles the Bulls ran into were due in large part to goaltender Aaron Frohm.

“I can sum that game (vs. Buffalo) in two words. Aaron Frohm,” Oswego State head coach Jay Peacock said.

Behind a depleted defense, which missed two key players due to suspension in Matt Brady and George Scouras, Frohm made 46 saves against the nationally ranked Bulls. Ben Lantz scored the lone goal for a Buffalo team that struggled to solve Frohm. Being heavily outshot in the contest 47-17, Oswego had to be opportunistic which is exactly what Ryan Alesandro did for the Lakers when he tied the game. Richie Santini hustled after a delayed icing call in the Buffalo end and beat out an icing call. He then passed the loose puck out front to James Hollowell who made another quick pass to a wide open Alesandro for the goal.

“We were hoping for a win and had our opportunities but weren’t able to cash in on them,” Peacock said. “But we played an outstanding game.”

Buffalo outscored Oswego 2-1 in the shootout; Sam Vaimberg scored the lone shootout goal for the Lakers. Justin Smith almost extended the shootout to a fourth round but hit the post on the game’s final shot.

Despite the lopsided difference in offensive changes in favor of Buffalo, the Lakers showed little signs of quitting.

“It’s easy to keep your head up when you’re playing a nationally ranked team and the score’s 1-1,” Peacock said.

The following afternoon, Oswego dropped another game against Canisius College, 4-2, in a non-league matchup.

The Lakers took on the Golden Griffins with a short bench due to off-ice issues within the team, but the game was an opportunity for other players to step up.

“Guys who usually are in a digger type of role got a chance to be in a scorer’s role,” Peacock said.

Players such as Ryan Alesandro, Jordan Alhart and Michael Henry were able to enjoy an increase in ice time for the Lakers. Matt Potrzeba scored on a 4-on-2 rush into the Canisius end while top line players Chris Timmons and D.J. Mazzoni were able to get back in the point column after a three game absence.

“(Timmons and Mazzoni) haven’t been able to score for a few games so it was good to see them get their confidence,” Peacock said.

Between the pipes, Dylan Niewiemski and Sal Annunziata split time which was the plan from the start according to Peacock. Annunziata came in relief for Niewiemski half way through the second period.

The Lakers dropped two places in the NECHL standings into fifth place after the weekend. Oswego travels to newly third place Syracuse University at 6:30 P. M. this upcoming Friday night then face RIT on Saturday at home at 8:00 P. M.
