Historic $5 million gift to name new science complex

A $5 million gift—the largest cash philanthropic gift in SUNY Oswego’s 150-year history—will name the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation, now under construction and set to open in fall 2013.

A native of Central New York who used a math degree from SUNY Oswego to make a fortune in the real estate business has informed the college of his intention to bequeath approximately $5 million to his alma mater in support of the Possibility Scholars program.

“I applaud Governor Cuomo for empowering the creative ideas that can help sustain and amplify the outstanding work happening throughout the SUNY system. With Chancellor Zimpher’s leadership, and the goals of the Power of SUNY giving us a path forward, the three additional $20 million 2020 Challenge Grants announced yesterday will significantly increase the benefits our campuses can bring to bear on success for all of the citizens of New York state.”

SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley today (Tuesday, Aug. 9) responded to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s signing the historic SUNY 2020 agreement into law: “Because SUNY creates educational and economic opportunities that are vital to our state’s future, we applaud the leadership and teamwork that went into this historic agreement. With a rational tuition plan, our institutions can remain among the most affordable in the nation, while we can focus on delivering the highest value in education. We thank Governor Cuomo, the Legislature and other leaders for developing a road map to success for our students, their families and the SUNY system.
