SUNY Oswego hosts 8th annual Youth Employment Summit
Oswego for the eighth annual Youth Employment Summit on Nov. 7 to learn about the many career choices that await them.
The college’s Office of Business and Community Relations and the Workforce Development Board of Oswego County hosted the event in Sheldon Hall. Planned by the youth subcommittee, the event featured a number of workshops on a wide variety of career paths and occupations.
Area professionals presented the workshops, providing information in the fields of manufacturing, energy, health care, law enforcement and sustainability. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to attend workshops on what to expect of college life, OBCR’s Starting Your Own Business and on personality assessment to assist them with finding careers closely related to their personalities.
One highlight of the summit was a special presentation by Brooks Gibbs, a leading motivational speaker for youths, titled “Life Equals Choices.” Gibbs has earned a reputation as a leading authority on youth issues like bullying and life choices, and has been featured in Teen People Magazine, the Washington Post and on CBS television.
“The young people paid attention to every word he said and gave him a rousing, standing ovation,” said planning committee member Karen Merrill of Oswego County Opportunities. “We were fortunate to have such a highly respected and entertaining speaker as Mr. Gibbs and would not have been able to do so if not for the support we received from the area businesses and organizations that helped sponsor the Youth Summit, including Constellation Energy, Huhtamaki, Eastern Shore Associates, Fulton Savings Bank, the Workforce Board of Oswego County and the Labor Council of Oswego County.”
Workshop presenters included Erin Atkins from Central New York Area Health Education Center; Sgt. Jeff Dunsmoor, Oswego County Sheriff’s Department; District Attorney Greg Oakes; Probation Officer Rae Domicolo; Krista Fox, Entergy Nuclear; Brian Warner, Warner Physical Therapy; John Nelson, Nelson Funeral Home; Dennis Goss, Foster Funeral Home; Robert Davis, Laura Phohl and Eric Enwright, Novelis; and Paula Annessi, Bryant & Stratton Institute.
Additionally, presenters from SUNY Oswego included Michael Paestella of the Point, Katie Maxwell of the Office of Admissions.
