Many opening activities to greet students
The annual All-Campus Picnic invites new and returning students, faculty and staff to mingle and meet on Monday afternoon, Aug. 22. That day, when first-year students move into their residence halls, will also feature the Welcoming Torchlight ceremony at 9 p.m. in Sheldon Park. This tradition, which celebrates the passing of knowledge from one class to another, will be preceded by musical performances at 8:30 p.m. Hewitt Union Night activities—including indoor roller skating, inflatable sumo-suit wrestling, carnival games and more—will follow.
“The O-Show,” an 8 p.m. performance by the college’s nationally noted Shaun Cassidy Fan Club Improv Comedy Troupe and touring comedian Tiny Glover in the Hewitt Union OZone, will headline Tuesday’s events. A campus organization fair, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Penfield Library, will offer students an opportunity to find out more about campus organizations and how to become involved. Project Play, noon to 2 p.m. in Lee Hall and on adjacent fields, will foster friendly competition among residence halls and other student teams.
Project Serve, happening throughout the day on Wednesday, Aug. 24, will provide new and returning students an opportunity to help out through volunteer activities while making new friends. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a DWI simulator in the Hewitt Union main lounge will warn of the dangers of drinking and driving. On this last day before fall classes start, students can also have a ball at a volleyball tournament beginning at 10 a.m. between Cayuga and Onondaga halls.
New features of opening activities this year will include an opportunity for a SUNY Oswego student to win an iPod through a passport program. Students who attend selected campus activities can have their passport punched and, when they have a certain number of marks, can drop off their pass at the Office of Campus Life in Hewitt Union. A drawing will take place at the “Can I Kiss You?” presentation, a program on college relationships and respect, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31.
SUNY Oswego’s Office of Campus Life sponsors these opening activities that welcome around 8,300 students, about 3,700 of whom stay in 11 residence halls. For more information, members of the campus community can visit www.oswego.edu/opening or call 312-2301.
