RSVP puts out call for volunteer aides during tax season

SUNY Oswego’s RSVP is seeking volunteers in Oswego County to assist senior citizens and others with the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns.

The training for both new and seasoned tax aides will take place Jan. 7 to 11 in Baldwinsville.

Training will cover federal and state tax laws that apply to personal returns.  A training manual gives detailed descriptions of the federal forms and applicable tax law requirements. Self-test exercises are provided to clarify each area of the federal tax forms.

On completion of training, prospective tax-aide counselors are required to pass an open-book examination to ensure they are qualified to assist taxpayers in preparing their returns. There are no restrictions on who may volunteer as a tax aide.

Tax-aide background requirements include relative comfort with filling out personal tax returns; interest in working with numbers, along with the challenge of working through tax forms and documentation; and willingness to contribute 40 hours from Feb. 1 to April 15, helping primarily senior citizen taxpayers with their returns.

For more information on the Tax-Aide Program or other service initiatives offered by RSVP, call 312-2317, email rsvp@oswego.edu or visit the office at 103 Rich Hall on the SUNY Oswego campus. More information also is available at oswego.edu/rsvp

RSVP, a program of the college’s Office of Business and Community Relations, is coordinated nationally by the Corporation for National and Community Service and sponsored locally by SUNY Oswego and the United Way.
