TV special featured Oswego alumnus and his 9/11 rescuer
Friday’s nationally televised “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will feature Oswego alumnus and 9/11 hero John McLoughlin.
The ABC reality television series presents its Veterans Day special live at 8 p.m. EST. The episode will include previous work done to the home of retired U.S. Marine Jason Thomas, who helped rescue McLoughlin from the wreckage of the World Trade Center in 2001.
McLoughlin, a 1975 Oswego graduate, was working for the Port Authority the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, and took part in evacuation efforts following the terrorist attacks. He and partner Will Jimeno were trapped in an elevator shaft for more than 22 hours after the collapse of the first tower.
Of 20 people pulled from the WTC site following 9/11, McLoughlin and Jimeno were Nos. 18 and 19 thanks in large part to Thomas. ABC invited all three men down to the National September 11 Memorial during filming of the “Extreme Makeover” special.
“I had talked to him on the phone, but had never met Jason [Thomas] in person before that,” said McLoughlin, who had 27 surgeries performed in the six weeks following his rescue. “Will and I surprised him.”
A variety of stars also appeared during in the special, which raised money for veteran’s organizations.
