The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a division of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield will sponsor a falls prevention informational workshop for veterans of military service on Wednesday, May 1, in Mexico.
Dr. Betty Perkins-Carpenter, an Air Force veteran and president of Senior Fitness Productions Inc., will present the workshop—free to all veterans and their families—at noon at the Mexico VFW, 5930 Scenic Ave.
Perkins-Carpenter, a nationally known expert on falls prevention, has made a career of teaching people to be physically fit, safe and secure in their daily activities.
She also teaches professionals, adult caregivers and interested older adults her Six-Step Balance System, based on the belief that “fear of falling” is a major factor contributing to falling—a self-fulfilling fear. Her system focuses on helping older adults maintain and reclaim their balance through a series of activities that are fun and easy, give hope and motivate, and are designed to reduce falls and the fear of falling.
RSVP in Oswego County launched the Six Steps to Better Balance series last October after extensive training provided by Perkins-Carpenter. Rachel Brooks, an RSVP volunteer and certified Osteo Bone Builders instructor, studied with Perkins Carpenter to supplement the regimen and help control osteoporosis. Response has been positive and there is a waiting list for participants in future classes.
Carol Simpson and Arelene Townsend have joined in as Better Balance instructors. The six-week course fee is $30 and includes class materials. Sessions are open to everyone, with current Osteo Bone Builders participants receiving a discount.
