State offers disaster preparedness training in Oswego July 30
New York State is offering two-hour training sessions for residents to have the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible. In Oswego, a session will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, in SUNY Oswego’s Sheldon Hall ballroom.
Participants are required to register in advance at http://www.prepare.ny.gov/training-events.
“With severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme, it is more important than ever that New Yorkers are prepared for disasters and know what to do in an emergency,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said.
Trainings will be led by the New York National Guard, working with experts from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
Training sessions are coordinated with local county emergency management personnel. Oswego’s session is endorsed by the governor, state Sen. Patty Ritchie, Assembly member Will Barclay, Oswego County Legislature Chairman Kevin Gardner and Minority Leader Michael Kunzwiler, and Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen.
The training course will provide an introduction to responding to a natural or man-made disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies.
A key component of this training is distribution of free New York State Disaster Preparedness Kits to all participants (one per family) containing key items to assist individuals in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Items in the kit include an AM-FM pocket radio with batteries, packs of drinking water, food bars, a first aid kit, duct tape and other items that may be useful in the event of a disaster.
Together, the training and kits will help New Yorkers be the most-trained and best-prepared citizens in the country.
