Possibility Scholarship

Possibility Scholarship to support future scientists, engineers

Oswego students working with schoolchildren.SUNY Oswego’s new Possibility Scholars program aims to help students in the Oswego and Syracuse City School Districts who otherwise would not be able to afford pursuing degrees in science and technology fields.

Stanley made the announcement July 15 during a presentation with SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, who was visiting SUNY Oswego as part of her tour of all 64 SUNY campuses in her first 100 days in office.

Supported by private donations, Possibility Scholarships assist promising students with tuition, room and board, as well as hands-on research and international service learning.

“The Possibility Scholarship not only removes financial barriers for talented students looking to enter the sciences, but also provides the kind of meaningful experiences that will enable them to succeed after graduation,” SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley said.

The scholarship program is designed to aid students from the Syracuse and Oswego
City School Districts who meet SUNY Oswego’s admissions criteria; have an interest in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or math fields; and have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to first-generation college students.

The Possibility Scholarship will be applied in coordination with any other grants or scholarships awarded, to assure that each Possibility Scholar receives financial support for tuition, room and board for four years at SUNY Oswego.

Supplemental academic activities critical to the overall development of students, such as a summer undergraduate research experience tackling a pressing issue plus a global service project, will be included in the scholarship package, making it one of the most comprehensive educational opportunities offered in the region, Stanley said.

Applications for the first Possibility Scholars will begin this fall for the 2010-11 academic year.

“We’re designing a program that will transform the lives of our student scholars and the world,” Stanley said. “Our scholars can dream big and set high goals, while becoming the knowledgeable and active citizens capable of conquering the most important challenges facing our future. The initiative supports our vital mission to educate thoughtful, well-prepared citizens in our increasingly globalized society.”
