Boston-based ensemble Sol y Canto and New York City’s Sweet Plantain String Quartet will serve up musical fare with spicy Latin flavors at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in Waterman Theatre at SUNY Oswegoâ€™s Tyler Hall.
One of several international-themed programs in the 2010-11 Artswego season, the evening, called “Sabor y Memoria” (“Flavor and Memory”), will blend the talents and stage personalities of these popular performers for a tribute to favorite regional foods. The menu ranges from milonga to merengue, Argentine samba to Puerto Rican bomba.
“For several years, Artswego has worked to bring Sol y Canto to Central New York,” said Mary Avrakotos, coordinator of Artswego, SUNY Oswego’s performing arts series. “To have a stellar young quartet like Sweet Plantain on the same stage provides a great opportunity for area audiences.”
Led by composer/guitarist Brian Amador and singer Rosi Amador, Sol y Canto (the name means “Sun and Song”) has offered lively celebrations of Latin music from the Newport Folk Festival to the White House. With musicians from Uruguay, Peru, Panama and Argentina on vocals, piano, winds, bass and percussion, the group has established a reputation for quirky original compositions and spirited renditions of styles old and new from many Latin countries.
The Sweet Plantain String Quartet combines classical training with a gift for improvisation and a sharp ear for the latest Latino sounds of New York City. These musicians have brought the rhythmic vitality of Latin music to recent projects for film, contemporary dance and Broadway. Sweet Plantainâ€™s ability to move with ease from classical repertoire to street-savvy rap keeps the group in demand for educational ventures, such as a new string program at the St. Ignatius School in the South Bronx.
To complement the feast of Latin music, Artswego is joining with the ALANA (African, Latino, Asian and Native American) Student Leadership Conference to offer a dessert reception for concertgoers, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the Waterman Theatre lobby. Each of 10 multicultural organizations at SUNY Oswego has offered a fondly remembered recipe for the event. Audience members may sample these treats and take home a cookbook. Dr. Patricia Clark, assistant professor of English, and Monico Soto-Granado, admissions counselor, are advisers for the pre-concert treat.
The performance and residency of Sol y Canto and Sweet Plantain at SUNY Oswego are made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The SUNY Oswego Office of International Education and Programs will provide additional support.
Tickets for the concert and reception are $15 ($12 for seniors 60 and older and SUNY Oswego faculty and staff; $7 for students).
