Alumna urges students to 'just say yes'
Honors Convocation keynote speaker Lisa Tamilia urged the assembled students to “just say yes” April 22 at the Campus Center.
Tamilia spoke at the formal academic ceremony, where more than 100 SUNY Oswego students received awards for their academic achievements.
“The challenges you will face in the marketplace will be great,” the 1989 Oswego graduate told the students. “To help overcome those challenges I challenge you to these three simple words: ‘Just say yes.’”
She urged the students to say yes to becoming positive and enthusiastic, to working through college, to opportunity, to volunteerism and to cultivating relationships.
Tamilia encouraged the honorees to embrace obstacles, accept offers of help from alumni, improve the world and have a sense of humor.
“Each of you have the ability, heart and smarts to make changes to improve life and work,” she told the students.
“Just say yes to confidence in what you bring to the table and your SUNY Oswego learning experience,” she concluded. “Your youth and intelligence is necessary to perpetuate our industries to the next level.”
Tamilia manages 24 independent insurance agencies with 33 locations across 10 Central New York counties for Erie Insurance Group, where she is District Sales Manager III.
She established her career with CNA Insurance (while attending SUNY Oswego) and in the 22-plus years since has excelled as an insurance professional and mentor.
The 2006 Central New York 40 Under 40 Award winner has been involved with school and mentorship programs her entire career, including teen driver safety and young entrepreneur programs.
A business administration major at Oswego, Tamilia remains involved with the college as a Reunion volunteer and mentor in the Alumni Sharing Knowledge program. She is currently pursuing an MBA at Oswego.
