American Heart Association recognizes SUNY Oswego's 'Wear Red' effort


SUNY Oswego’s fundraising effort on behalf of Wear Red Day earned the college two awards recently from the American Heart Association’s Greater Syracuse and North Country Division.

SUNY Oswego is one of three among 210 businesses, institutions and organizations in the division this year to earn a “Top Wear Red Company” designation, according to Jennifer Pratt, the association’s communications director in Western New York.

The association also named Oswego “Rookie of the Year—2011” in the college’s first year with the campaign. Twenty-one SUNY Oswego volunteers in February raised $1,525 for the fight against cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer nationally among women.

“It was a team effort across the college, including students and staff, and I think that’s what makes it work,” said Jeffrey Grimshaw, interim director of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, who chaired the fundraising event.

The American Heart Association created the national Go Red for Women organization in 2004 to dispel myths and raise awareness about heart disease among women. Donations for the heart association’s annual Wear Red Day assist research, education and the development of new treatments to fight heart disease.
