Renaissance Madrigal Banquet offers feast of food, fun


imageThe traditional feast of food and entertainment will return to SUNY Oswego when the 11th annual Renaissance Madrigal Banquet unfolds on Dec. 4 and 5 at The Forum in Hewitt Union.

Presented by the SUNY Oswego music and theatre departments, the festivities will include actors and musicians who invite the audience to take part in a holiday celebration in an English Country manor house hosted by Lord and Lady Mumford Turnspit during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The queen herself will make an appearance at the festivities. An array of colorful characters will provide musical entertainment as well as dancing, juggling and a commedia-inspired play titled “The Dentist.”

Directors for event are Dr. Julie Pretzat, music department chair, and Mark Cole, theatre department chair. Costumes are designed by Kitty Macey and assisted by Judy McCabe, both of the theatre department. The recorder consort, under the direction of Dr. Marilynn Smiley, and the college’s Chamber Singers will perform.

The authentic menu will recreate 16th century delicacies, Cole said, with the meals served banquet style.

The evening will begin with spiced cider or mulled wine, assorted old world breads, and toasted cheese and asparagus hors d’oeuvres.

The banquet, which will include several vegetarian dishes, will begin with pumpkin soup. Entrees will include chicken with wine and cheese sauce, roasted salmon in an onion wine sauce and baked courgette (zucchini). The banquet will include side dishes such as risi bisi (rice and peas), cabbage with bacon and provencale compote. The dessert will feature bread pudding with bourbon sauce.

Auxiliary Services at SUNY Oswego will plan and prepare the meal.

The event will commence at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, and at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5.

The cost—$32 for adults, $30 for senior citizens and students, and $28 for SUNY Oswego students—includes the meal, entertainment and tax. Wine and other libations will be available at extra cost.
