Education professor to assist in Brazilian state's school development
Dr. Alfred Frederick, distinguished service professor in SUNY Oswego’s School of Education, will be a visiting professor and scholar in residence at the State University of Piaui in Brazil beginning this summer.
The State Secretariat of Education of Piaui and the State University of Piaui invited him to serve in these capacities to continue research that will assist in developing the state of Piaui’s schooling system. Frederick said he will continue his cross-cultural work on culturally relevant teaching while he is there over the next several summers.
As creator and coordinator of the African and Brazilian Academic and Cultural Exchange Initiative in Oswego’s School of Education, he has previously coordinated and conducted research and training in Benin and Brazil aimed at improving academic achievement of students in primary and secondary schools.
Research findings in Benin generated recommendations that were documented in the book “Bridging the Gap Between Home and School: A Paradigm for Monitoring, Assessing and Improving the Schooling Process of Socioculturally Diverse Student Populations.” The book, published in both French and English, was disseminated to classroom teachers free of charge, and teacher training in Benin uses the recommended strategies for improving the schooling process.
Frederick assembled colleagues and began similar work in three regions of Brazil, including Piaui, in 2010 and 2011. The research involves an evaluation of Brazilian public education at the primary and secondary levels and is intended to result in a published study that includes research-based suggestions to improve the schooling process.
He has a long history of teaching and consulting on education in Brazil. He taught at the Federal University of Santa Maria for seven years before he joined SUNY Oswego in 1985 and coordinated an education reform effort, including production of curriculum guides, in the early 1990s. His first book, “Curriculum and the Socio-cultural Context,” was first published in Brazil in Portuguese and later in the United States in English.
