The SUNY Oswego Office of Business and Community Relations will launch a third Citizens Academy on Sustainability on June 3 at Oswego State Downtown.

A citizens academy is an interactive educational program that helps citizens learn what they can do to sustain a healthy, eco-friendly community. Weekly topics will include ecological principles, water and energy efficiency, and sustainable food and buying.

Meetings will run 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Thursday from June 3 to July 15 at Oswego State Downtown, corner of West First and Bridge streets. There is a $10 fee for the discussion-style class and materials.

A graduate of an earlier academy will return to lead the group from the perspective of permaculture, which seeks to create productive systems for supporting human needs in ways that are ecologically harmonious—nonpolluting and sustainable.

“We are very excited to offer the Citizens Academy for a third time, to coincide with the start of the Farmers’ Market,” said Thad Mantaro, assistant director of the Office of Business and Community Relations. “And we’re also very excited to have a graduate of our second program, Valerie Dawnstar—a trained permaculture expert—lead the program.”

Those who complete the program will receive a certificate of participation, and information on how to become engaged with local sustainability activities. Participants should preregister at 312-3492 or obcr@oswego.edu.
