A range of performances and presentations will celebrate Black History Month during February at SUNY Oswego.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, a montage of dialogue, poetry, song and memories titled “Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale” will follow three young women as they weave stories exploring gentrification and evolving culture in Harlem. Due to a late scheduling change, the venue for the play will be announced at http://www.oswego.edu/arts.

Tickets for the play, directed and co-written by Jaylene Carter, will be available at the door for $8 ($5 for SUNY Oswego students). Co-sponsors are SUNY Oswego’s Black Student Union and Student Association Programming Board.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, in Room 114 of the Campus Center, the SUNY Oswego Institute for Global Engagement and Artswego will offer a free preview of the documentary theatre production “Cry for Peace: Voices of the Congo” with ArtsEngage of Syracuse University, Syracuse Stage and Ping Chong & Company.

The Black Student Union also plans the following events, among others, to celebrate Black History Month:

* “Black Tunes: Color Line Criticism,” 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Room 201 of the Campus Center, a free presentation critiquing depictions of African Americans in cartoons/animations and discussing how negative depictions have affected African American youth.

* “Unlimited Hype: Variety Show,” 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Hewitt Union ballroom, a free fashion and talent show.

*  “A Sigh of Peace,” 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in Hewitt Union ballroom, BSU’s 42nd annual dinner featuring keynote speaker Pamela Salaam Jaha and student performances. Contact the Black Student Union, bsu@oswego.edu, about reservations or for more information.
