Participants will include Betty Fadden of the Oswego YMCA, News10Now sports reporter Chris Watson and SUNY Oswego men’s lacrosse Coach Dan Witmer. Sponsored by the Oswego Alumni Association, the panel is part of the college’s annual Laker Days festival. There is no admission charged, and the public is invited.
“We’re looking at an informative panel that shows there are many paths to careers in athletics, since most college athletes can’t expect to play sports professionally,” said Michelle Tackett-Spinner, assistant director of alumni relations at SUNY Oswego. “Over the years, former student-athletes have found their niche in everything from coaching and teaching to management and sports medicine to journalism and promotion.”
Fadden is the corporate wellness/financial development director for the Oswego YMCA. The 1974 SUNY Oswego graduate’s duties in more than two decades of experience with the organization have included overseeing corporate and school wellness programs through the YMCA and leading support campaigns to provide programs and scholarships. Fadden is certified in many training areas and was among the first group to receive national aerobics training certification.
An Oswego native and a 1998 SUNY Oswego broadcasting graduate, Watson is weekend sports anchor at News10Now in Syracuse. His previous experience includes sports reporting and anchoring duties at WIXT NewsChannel 9 and WSTM-TV3 in Syracuse and directing the sports department at WUTR-TV20 in Utica. His honors in the field include an Associated Press award in 2002.
Witmer’s tenure running the men’s lacrosse program at SUNY Oswego stretches back more than 20 years. He is a two-time Empire Lacrosse League Coach of the Year who has coached three All-Americans and earned five berths in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament. With a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and master’s in education from Oswego, he teaches English at Hannibal High School and extends his mentorship into directing the college’s annual summer lacrosse camp.
Laker Days, which runs from Jan. 27 to 30, is funded by an NCAA Choices grant to promote institutional pride through strengthening students’ participation in intercollegiate athletic contests and other alcohol-free campus-sponsored events.
