Rock the Vote kicks off Sept. 10 at SUNY Oswego

In an effort to encourage student involvement in the upcoming presidential election, the SUNY Oswego Civic Engagement Coalition has coordinated its first comprehensive Rock the Vote campaign, starting Sept. 10 with Constitution Week.

Partnering with other organizations on campus such as the Student Association, SAPB, Residence Life and Housing, ALANA Student Leadership Conference, Political Science Club and SUNY Oswego’s media outlets, Rock the Vote has organized a range of events this fall to help educate students on the issues and how, where and when to vote, and has provided many opportunities for students to volunteer in the civic engagement process.

All events are open to local residents to enjoy.

The campaign will kick off Constitution Week on Monday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center auditorium with a talk on campaign finance provided by political science professor Bruce Altschuler, followed by instruction on the process to register to vote, either locally or via absentee ballot. Altschuler is frequently sought out by the media, at home and abroad, as an expert on U.S. presidential campaigns.

Tuesday and Wednesday that week in Room 106 of Lanigan at 6 p.m., Rock the Vote will hold a film discussion series covering topics on education, the economy, heath care and pro-life/pro-choice with views from both sides of the political aisle presented.

Students representing the Democratic, Republican, Green and Libertarian parties will debate the issues facing the country on Thursday, Sept. 13. That will take place at 8 p.m. in front of a live audience in the Campus Center auditorium.

The week will wind down Saturday with Residence Life’s Laker Fest at Onondaga Circle at 1 p.m. and SAPB’s concert with 3LAU on the Campus Center south lawn at 9 p.m.

At each event, students will be provided with the tools and information to register to vote.
