The New York State Laborers’ Employers’ Cooperation and Education Trust Fund confirmed that education is important to its members by continuing as a Presidential Sponsor of the annual event set for Sept. 9 and 10 on campus and in the community.

The theme of this year’s Fall Classic is “Investing in the Future.” The two-day event will open with the Sithe Luncheon and a keynote address by Ed Barlow of Creating the Future.

“Our union and our contractors understand the importance of a good education to meet the challenges of working in today’s world. We support the Presidential Scholars Program at Oswego State because it helps deserving young people get the education needed for those challenges,” said Dr. James Melius, director of LECET.

Bill Shannon, business manager for the Upstate New York Laborers’ Council, added, “The deserving students who receive the Presidential Scholarships are representative of the sons and daughters of our union members. We’re happy that our long-term relationship with the college has helped to transform the face of the campus.”

LECET is one of four Presidential Level sponsors who support the Fall Classic at the highest level of giving.

“We are grateful for the support of LECET and for their long-term commitment to the students of Oswego State,” said SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley. “Their support helps to make a quality Oswego education possible for some of the most promising students, who will, in turn, be able to make a positive difference in our state, our nation and the world.”

Other Presidential Sponsors are Constellation Energy, GE Energy and Sithe.

The Fall Classic, now in its 15th year, supports the Presidential Scholarship program at SUNY Oswego, which offers merit scholarships to academically qualified students.

Since the fall semester of 1997, the Fall Classic has provided over $1 million in scholarship money for more than 1,000 Presidential Scholars.
