SUNY Oswego art department faculty members Julieve Jubin and Juan Perdiguero will offer artwork that each created during recent sabbatical leaves in free exhibitions Oct. 21 to Nov. 19 in Tyler Art Gallery’s north gallery.
The opening reception for both artists will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. The artists’ gallery talks will take place at 6 p.m. The Oswego State Latin Jazz Ensemble will play 5 to 6:30.
Jubin, associate professor and coordinator of the college’s photography minor, was inspired and moved by everyday citizens of Cuba during a research visit for a SUNY Oswego course in travel photography. In an exhibition titled “Centro Habana 2011,” Jubin will document what she experienced as the “genuine warmth” of Cubans in detailed and vibrant color photographs.
“In the heart of Havana, a large central district referred to as Centro pulses with the daily activities of Cuban culture,” Jubin said. “Genuine warmth radiates from the people, between family and friends, welcoming even strangers into the various rituals of daily life. Cuban society, while burdened by the many social and political restrictions, poverty and scarcity of goods, manages to endure and shine amidst the persistent hardships and ruins of political struggle.”
Perdiguero, an associate professor and native of Madrid, Spain, works in mixed media, displaying innovative ways of drawing that merge with photography. In an exhibition titled “Animalidad,” he will exhibit images that are classical in appearance but strongly contemporary in the way they are conceptualized and rendered.
His realistic images of animals are intertwined with abstract and surreal landscapes of photo pictorial marks that try to psychologically and emotionally engage the viewer.
Tyler Art Gallery is open 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. On weekends, gallery visitors can park for free in campus lots. Patrons needing assistance should call 312-2113.
