The Astronomy Club at SUNY Oswego will host its spring “Stars over Oswego” telescope viewing event at the Romney Observatory at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21.
This free event allows the public to view Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, the moon and star clusters in real time through telescopes. A tour of the spring constellations will also be given. Telescopes include a 6-inch refractor in the dome, a portable 8-inch reflector and a 5.5-inch “GoTo” telescope, programmed to point at objects the viewer selects. The party starts at sunset, so that viewers can catch Mercury before it sets, said Scott Roby, associate professor of astronomy at SUNY Oswego and the club’s adviser.
Those interested in attending should call 312-2790 after 5 p.m. on April 21 or, if that viewing is canceled, the rain dates (next two nights) to see if the event is canceled due to clouds. No reservations are required.
The observatory sits behind the Romney Field House commuter parking lot on Route 104. For more information, call 343-4294.
