The trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre.
The band takes its name from Kihlstedt’s critically acclaimed solo debut, which Billboard magazine called a “head-spinning collection that melds classical virtuosity, folk soul and pop imagination” that “shows off her talents not only as an instrumentalist but as a compellingly individual vocalist/songwriter/arranger.”
Kihlstedt provides violin and vocals, Marika Hughes contributes cello and vocals, and Shahzad Ismaili plays percussion, guitar and electronics. The trio “explores the boundaries between art song and pop song, using distinct elements of both, formally and aesthetically,” according to the band’s Web site, 2footyard.com.
All About Jazz magazine says of Kihlstedt: “The ultimate compliment paid is to call her the female equivalent of Tom Waits.”
A grant from the Rosamond Gifford Foundation supports this year’s Ke-Nekt series. WCNY Classic FM provides media support.
Tickets for the performance cost $15 ($10 for seniors and students, $5 for SUNY Oswego students).
