Astronomy club to host viewing of Mercury's transit

SUNY Oswego’s Astronomy Club will host a public viewing of Mercury crossing the sun from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8.

The free event outside Piez Hall on campus will allow the public to view a three-foot image of the sun showing sunspots and the black silhouette of Mercury as it crosses the sun’s disk, said Dr. Scott Roby, the club’s adviser and an associate professor at SUNY Oswego.

Visitors can park for free at parking lots close to Piez Hall for the event.

No one should look directly at the sun without specialized equipment, Roby said.

No reservations are required, but those interested in attending should call 312-2790 after noon on Nov. 8 to see if the event is canceled because of excessive cloud cover.
