The production will unfold in Tyler Hall’s lab theatre at 6 p.m. Friday, May 12, and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 13.
“It’s a psychological play,” Sprague explained, “a journey of these confused adults trying to find what makes them happy. Each of them wants to be in control of their own lives, but unknowingly they each affect the other’s ability to maintain control.”
“Some Do It Naturally” is Sprague’s senior capstone requirement for graduation and a piece he has been developing since fall 2005. The one-act piece runs a bit less than an hour, he said.
The plot involves friendship, a clandestine affair and the impact of people’s selfish choices. The play ponders “how your actions affect others, cause and effect,” Sprague said. “I guess, if anything, I want audiences to realize they shouldn’t take relationships for granted.”
The performance will be done with minimal lighting and sets, something Sprague feels will draw the audience deeper into the text and emotion of the piece. “It’s a powerful verbal piece,” he noted. “I want the audience to listen and reflect more than anything.”
The cast includes Jennifer Caruana as Deidre, Ryan Powers as Brent, Michael Racioppa as Cody and Steven Screws as Johnny.
The student crew working under Sprague’s direction includes lighting designer Heather Berg and sound designer Matthew Boudreau.
For the students—especially seniors like Sprague—it represents one more opportunity to learn and express themselves outside the classroom environment.
“You don’t normally get a chance to perform what you write, so I know this is a great opportunity,” Sprague said.
“Some Do It Naturally” is a free performance with a suggested donation at the door to support SUNY Oswego students attending the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival next January. The play is intended for mature audiences.
