Accomplished jazz pianist Dariusz Terefenko will appear in a free solo concert Thursday, Oct. 21, in SUNY Oswego’s Campus Center auditorium.
Dr. Eric Schmitz, assistant professor of music, studied with Terefenko at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, and will host the 5:30 p.m. presentation.
“Dr. Terefenko is one of those extremely rare individuals with a profound knowledge of both jazz and classical traditions and the ability to combine the two seamlessly in his spectacular improvisations,” said Schmitz.
Terefenko, an assistant professor of music theory at the Eastman School, also will offer a free public clinic at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 21 in Room 41 of Tyler Hall.
A native of Poland, Terefenko is pianist for Rochester’s Smugtown Stompers, an early jazz performance ensemble specializing in New Orleans-style jazz and Dixieland. He has given solo concerts in Europe and Canada, as well as the United States. His first solo album, “Evidence,” offers his creative take on favorite jazz standards, jazz instrumentals and his own compositions.
“His depth of musical knowledge is astonishing and his ability to motivate others in his teaching is quite remarkable,” Schmitz said. “Our students and community members are in for a definite treat.”
SUNY Oswego’s Artswego supports Terefenko’s appearance. For more information on Artswego programs, navigate to www.oswego.edu/arts.
