Honors Convocation recognizes student achievement

Honors Week at SUNY Oswego will culminate in the college-wide Honors Convocation at 3 p.m. Friday, April 23, in the Campus Center arena and convocation hall. More than 100 SUNY Oswego students will receive awards for their academic achievements at this formal academic ceremony.

An audience of family, friends and campus colleagues of the honorees will witness the procession of faculty presenters in academic regalia, remarks by guest speaker Lisa Tamilia and the bestowing of the awards.

A 1989 graduate of SUNY Oswego, Tamilia has used her business administration degree to develop a successful career as an insurance executive while pursing opportunities as a mentor and volunteer. She is also a graduate student at Oswego, working toward an MBA degree.

She began with CNA Insurance while still attending SUNY Oswego. Today she manages 24 independent insurance agencies with 33 locations across 10 Central New York counties for Erie Insurance Group, where she is a district sales manager III.

Tamilia has been involved with school and mentorship programs throughout her career. She was honored among Central New York’s 40 Under 40 in 2006 and recognized as “Volunteer of the Year” while working at State Farm. Her community service interests range widely from Syracuse Stage to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, from the American Diabetes Association to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

At her alma mater, she remains involved as a volunteer with alumni reunion and as a mentor in the Alumni Sharing Knowledge program.

Week of honors

Earlier during SUNY Oswego’s Honors Week, hundreds of students will have been inducted into honor societies in their disciplines, been recognized at receptions for a variety of achievements, and presented or performed their scholarly and creative projects at Quest, the college-wide symposium on April 21, and other academic gatherings.

Quest and Honors Convocation are open to the public. For details on Quest, see www.oswego.edu/quest.
