SUNY Oswego’s Family and Friends Weekend, Oct. 21 to 23, will welcome visitors while celebrating student talent in the arts, athletics and involvement activities.
The weekend offers an opportunity for family members and friends to see what SUNY Oswego students have been up to for the first several weeks of the semester, while providing a range of special events for the campus and community to enjoy. Most events are free and open to all.
The weekend will feature three performances of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” presented by the college’s music and theatre departments. The musical comedy will unfold at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23.
Tickets for the play, suggested for adults and children 12 and older, cost $15 ($12 for seniors ages 62 and over, children 17 and younger, and SUNY Oswego faculty and staff; $7 for SUNY Oswego students). They are available from any SUNY Oswego box office, online at http://tickets.oswego.edu and by calling 312-2141.
The theatre department also will host “So You Think You Can Spell?” inviting students, family and friends to vie in a spell-off at 1 p.m. Saturday in Room 133 of the Campus Center. Winner will earn two tickets to that night’s performance.
A free concert featuring the College Choir, Chamber Singers, State Singers, College Orchestra and Concert Band will take place at noon on Sunday in the Hewitt Union ballroom.
Athletic action will include the season opener for the Laker men’s ice hockey team, facing Elmira at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Campus Center arena. At 7 p.m. Friday, the women’s ice hockey team will play an exhibition against the Durham Lightning in the arena. Tickets for either game cost $8 for the public and are available at any campus box office or online at http://tickets.oswego.edu.
The women’s volleyball team will host Fredonia at 7 p.m. Friday in Laker Hall. The Laker men’s soccer team will take on Cortland at 1 p.m. Saturday at the South Athletic Complex. At the same time, Oswego’s swimming and diving teams will present a Green and Gold intrasquad scrimmage in the Laker Hall pool.
Student organizations including the Aikido Club, Cheerleaders and O-swingers will perform from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Campus Center food and activities court. A larger group of organizations will show what they have to offer from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day in the Campus Center concourse.
The “Splash!” live art experience Saturday will feature paintings that go from larger-than-life blank canvas to work of art in less than 10 minutes. A special 1 p.m. session outside the Campus Center auditorium will feature the creation of a giant portrait of college founder Edward Austin Sheldon, in recognition of the institution’s 150th birthday. An 8 p.m. conservation-focused entertainment experience related to endangered animals will combine art, music and audience participation in the Hewitt Union ballroom.
Two live “Animal Adaptations” shows will feature live creatures from Rochester’s Seneca Park Zoo at 2 and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Students and visitors can get up close and personal with a variety of creatures at this session in the Campus Center auditorium.
