Economic Reckoning

Panel to examine economic crisis, one year later

SUNY Oswego will host a panel discussion, “The Financial Crisis One Year Later: A Lesson in Recession,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Room 101 of Lanigan Hall.

Panelists will include Dr. Ranjit Dighe and Dr. Lawrence Spizman, both of SUNY Oswego’s economics department; Dr. John MacDonald of the risk management program in Oswego’s School of Business; and Thomas Schneider, president and CEO of Pathfinder Bank and an adjunct in Oswego’s School of Business. Dr. Richard Skolnik, dean of the SUNY Oswego School of Business, will moderate the discussion.

Nola Heidlebaugh, the college’s civic engagement coordinator, said that the program will look at the year that followed the economic crisis that rocked both Wall Street and Main Street and will pose a number of questions.

“Is the worst over, or are there still downward trends facing us?” Heidlebaugh noted. “Did the stimulus package actually work, or could there have been similar results without it? What, if anything, should the government do to improve the employment picture? Just how has the economic landscape changed during the past year and what do those changes foreshadow for our future?”

SUNY Oswego’s Students in Free Enterprise chapter is a sponsor of the program.
