Driver Safety Program participants, instructors sought

Older drivers may register for upcoming six-hour AARP Driver Safety Program classes, according to SUNY Oswego RSVP. The first is Thursday, May 19.

RSVP also continues to recruit volunteers ages 55 and older to serve as instructors for the driver safety classes upon certification by a New York state trainer.

Driver Safety Program participants, on successful completion of a class, will receive a certificate to qualify for an insurance discount.

The dates, times and places of each class scheduled so far are as follows, with the contact person and phone:

* Thursday, May 19: 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 73 W. Second St., Oswego; call instructor Nancy Dashner, 343-0965, to register.

* Friday, May 20, 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, May 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Christian Alliance Church, New Haven; call Rachel Brooks, 963-1069 (no calls after 8 p.m.).

* Tuesday, May 24: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at SUNY Oswego Phoenix Center, Oswego County Industrial Park; call Priscilla Walts, 695-5186.

* Tuesday, June 21, and Wednesday, June 22: both noon to 3 p.m. at Palermo Town Hall; call Rachel Brooks, 963-1069 (no calls after 8 p.m.).

* Tuesday, July 12: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Scriba Municipal Building; call Peter Falanga, 593-3139.

* Tuesday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 20: both noon to 3 p.m. at New Haven Town Hall; call Rachel Brooks, 963-1069 (no calls after 8 p.m.).

* Tuesday, Aug. 9: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Volney Municipal Building; call Peter Falanga, 593-3139.

* Tuesday, Aug. 16, and Wednesday, Aug. 17: both noon to 3 p.m. at Palermo Town Hall; call Rachel Brooks, 963-1069 (no calls after 8 p.m.).

* Tuesday, Sept. 13: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Scriba Municipal Building; call Peter Falanga, 593-3139.
* Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Sept. 28: both 9 a.m. to noon, Christian Alliance Church, New Haven; call Rachel Brooks, 963-1069 (no calls after 8 p.m.).

Session cost is $14 ($12 for AARP members). Participants should bring to class a check or money order made out to AARP, driver’s license, pen or pencil and lunch (there generally will be 20-minute lunch break).

AARP provides certification for class participants and monitors training of and reimburses out-of-pocket expenses for volunteer instructors. RSVP, based in Room 103 of Rich Hall on the SUNY Oswego campus, works with the AARP to recruit and support instructors.
