SUNY Oswego will follow up earlier exhibitions of schoolchildren’s artwork with a show at Oswego State Downtown for two youngsters who have been constantly immersed in art as daughters of two art department employees.
In conjunction with Youth Art Month, “Daughters” will exhibit works by Sara Roe, 10, and Samantha Terpening, 9, from March 9 through April 6 at the downtown gallery, a branch of the College Store, corner of Bridge and West First streets.
Roe, daughter of faculty member and graphic design artist Kelly Roe, and Terpening, daughter of art department secretary Traci Terpening, will follow the footsteps of such SUNY Oswego exhibitions as one in 2010 by students at Kingsford Park Elementary School, one last year titled “Picto-Pals” with works of first-graders from Leighton Elementary School in conjunction with college students, and the annual “Generations” exhibitions of master of arts teaching candidates and their ninth- to 12th-grade students.
Cynthia Clabough, art department chair, said Oswego State Downtown’s schedule enabled a tie-in with another of the college’s Youth Art Month exhibitions at SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse featuring the works of students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The Oswego State Downtown exhibition will “help our kids feel connected to the work their parents are engaged in,” Clabough said. “Also, the inspiration came about because these kids come with their parents to all our department openings and events. At all our events they are given art supplies and often spend time making things while their parents visit.”
Clabough said the art department welcomes proposals from area art teachers for exhibitions of schoolchildren’s work. Teachers can contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org or Michael Flanagan, assistant director of Tyler Art Gallery, at email@example.com.
Oswego State Downtown is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. It can be reached at 216-4985.
