SUNY Oswego alumnus Dr. Joseph Coughlinâ€™s timely work with technology for aging Americans recently earned him some national coverage.
Coughlin, who graduated from Oswego in 1982, is director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. He was extensively quoted in a New York Times article titled “In a Graying Population, Business Opportunity.” It was the top story for the Business section in the Sunday, Feb. 6, edition of the Times.
Coughlin is also featured in a short video on the Times’ website accompanying the article.
The coverage focuses on research enabling companies to design products that help aging baby boomers, yet are attractive to younger buyers.
The Age Gain Now Empathy Suit—or Agnes for short—that helps companies simulate physical changes people may experience as they age was among the products featured in the coverage.
Coughlin earned his master’s degree in public policy from Brown University in 1985 and his doctorate in political science from Boston University in 1995.
Coughlin joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineering Systems Division in 1997 and in 1999, he founded the MIT AgeLab with the mission to conduct multi-disciplinary and global research on technology, business and the needs of aging population. He authors a blog on aging called Disruptive Demographics.
He was named a Distinguished Alumnus by SUNY Oswego in 2003.
