Oswego institute teaches teachers about energy

As the ongoing BP spill draws the world’s attention to modern society’s dependence on oil, two SUNY Oswego professors are preparing a two-week Energy Institute, beginning July 6, to help secondary school teachers educate youth “for a better future.”

Themed “Energizing Education for a Better Future,” the institute on the Oswego campus will provide math, science and technology teachers with activities they can implement in their current curriculum or use to develop new curricular units on energy and sustainability.

Dr. Alok Kumar, chair of the SUNY Oswego physics department, and Thomas Kubicki of the technology department direct the program. “We are going to train teachers to teach about energy issues effectively,” Kumar said. “This is a global issue that requires local action.”

A long-term goal of the institute is to infuse the workforce with new talent, while helping the teachers and everyone they teach to become better consumers and citizens in a global economy driven by energy.

The teachers will take field trips to a variety of energy facilities in the Oswego area. Topics will include the nature of energy, energy conservation, alternative energy sources such as sun and wind, nuclear and radiation safety, future energy resources and energy’s connection to politics and social cultures. Each teacher will build an energy curriculum portfolio that includes handouts, lesson plans and learning activities.

Participants can choose a non-credit option at a cost of $495 or pay tuition for three credits, graduate or undergraduate. Non-credit and graduate study options satisfy teachers’ professional development requirements, organizers said.

A shorter institute for elementary school teachers will be held Aug. 9 to 13.
