Artist of Middle Eastern displacement to speak Jan. 28

Still from Sama Alshaibi's 'The Bride Wears Orange.'Sama Alshaibi, an artist of Iraqi/Palestinian descent, will speak at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, in the Campus Center auditorium, Room 118. Her presentation about her work will be open to the public free of charge.

Alshaibi uses photography, video and performance to evoke the language of displacement and loss.  An assistant professor of photography and video at the University of Arizona, she is an artist in residence this month at Light Work in New York City, where she is creating collaborative multimedia works under the title “Baghdadi Mem/Wars.”

“As a Palestinian-Iraqi who has become a naturalized American citizen, I have a personal stake in the struggles for basic human rights, freedom and self-determination at the center of the events that dominate contemporary headlines,” Alshaibi has written. “In my work, I use my own body to test the limits of access and privilege by selecting among the multiplicitous and polarized East/West identities that make up who I am.”

Alshaibi’s work is shown internationally, with recent and upcoming exhibitions at Paris Photo, Art Dubai, the International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in South Korea, and solo exhibitions in the West Bank and London. She received her master of fine arts degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The artist will also speak in classes at SUNY Oswego during her two-day visit, said Dr. M. Neelika Jayawardane, director of SUNY Oswego’s Interdisciplinary Programs and Activities Center and an assistant professor of English and of global studies.
