Eco-Tankers: An Exhibition and Discussion by Bruce Conkle

Oregon artist and environmentalist Bruce Conkle envisions a future of sailing behemoths; retrofitted oil tankers that are highly adaptable to temperature fluctuations, rising sea levels, and changing precipitation patterns. Crops, orchards, and forests could be grown on these ships by resident arborists, horticulturalists, and beekeepers, to name a few. Conkle's exhibition, "Eco-Tankers," includes the artist's concept drawings and an armada of suspended eco-tankers constructed by students from grade school to college. Pat Pauly, guest curator for the Tyler Art Gallery's exhibition of twenty art quilts, will discuss historical quilting and its morphing into contemporary fiber work. Using the theme of the landscape, both literally and figuratively, these works treat the subject with abstraction as well as realism.

Although world public opinion supports freedom for Tibet and reveres the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader, the Chinese government and the majority of the Chinese people regard Tibet as a part of China and the Dalai Lama as a separatist. This presentation will examine the historical relationship between China and Tibet, and analyze Chinese claims to sovereignty over Tibet.

Northeast India encompasses the states of Arunchal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, and is home to at least thirty armed insurgent/militant organizations. While some insurgent groups demand rights, others ask for autonomy or a separate state (for an ethnic group), and still others want independence from India. Many of these groups claim to represent their communities.

The Historic Classroom
In 1862, Edward Austin Sheldon, began his book, A Manual of Elementary Instruction, with a list of nine principles of teaching and learning that were the foundation of the "Oswego Movement". These principles were both ground-breaking and controversial when the were introduced. They lead to changes in the way that teachers were trained and children were taught. While many of the specifics of Sheldon's approach have faded into history, the principles have stood the test of time and are a basis for modern educational theory and practice. The purpose of this Founders, Day Program is to highlight Sheldon's continuing contribution to the twenty-first century classroom. This program is endorsed by the Oswego Emeriti Association.

The Indian government considers the Northeast a 'disturbed areas' or a 'law and order situation' and has mounted a counter-insurgency operation involving the army and Border Security Forces. Often defined as simple case of center-state conflict, the situation is much more complex. Alliances and conflict between groups, trans-border networks, and extortion and drug trafficking have made violence a fact of life for many people. This presentation will focus on the complexities of insurgency and the failure peace accords and ceasefires to bring lasting peace to the region.

When Robert Mugabe won Zimbabwe's first multi-racial election in 1980, optimism for the newly independent state ran high around the world. Yet Zimbabwe, and Mugabe himself, appear to have failed the test of post-colonial political development. This talk uses the extraordinary public archive of 28 years of readers' commentaries to analyze the local and global discourse that emerged within the BBC World Service's coverage of Robert Mugabe and the failure of democracy in Zimbabwe.

Recent research has dispelled the myth that men do not experience body image concerns. While a small of men do experience problems associated with the thin ideal (e.g. anorexia and bulimia), most men are focused on achieving the muscular ideal. This talk will explore the ideas and research around men's and boys' drive for muscularity, including the behavioral and psychological (clinical and non-clinical) correlates of this body image ideal.

McCune will outline the history of immigration law, highlighting the historical context for various exclusionary acts and the consequences of the more recent changes in the law beginning in the 1960s. The Most Dangerous Place on Earth: Terrorism in Pakistan

Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in January 2008, Rep. David Scott of Georgia called Pakistan an "explosive tinderbox," echoing President Clinton's characterization of South Asia as the "most dangerous place on earth." In 2007, the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies reported the country had experienced 1,442 terrorist attacks, including the assassination of political candidate Benazir Bhutto. A Muslim country with a large army, nuclear weapons, long-standing covert support of terrorist groups (especially in Kashmir), and an uneasy relationship with tribal groups in the northwest frontier area, Pakistan is a mystery to most Americans. This presentation will focus on Pakistan's contradictory policies that at the same time support terrorist organizations and declare war against terrorism

Frank Byrne will lead a discussion on the ideals and policies conservatives from the American South have championed over the past two centuries. Intellectuals who helped construct this variety of U.S. conservatism as well as southern political leaders located within this tradition will be examined. The legacy of the southern conservatism and its possible significance for the future of American politics will be addressed as well.
