Millard Fillmore
Dear Sir,
I write at the request of Peter Carrol who is now employed by the Commissioner of Public Buildings as lamp lighter for that park of penny avenue ^ (between the president house) and _____. Peter is afraid that he will be dismissed from his place as a war has commenced and such a great number have been brought to the block. Peter is a faithful man + discharges his duty to the sake of achieved of the present commissioner that ____ is now sufficient in these times. Peter informs me that he was your chairman when you were here, and requests me to ask that you will say a word to save him a (uno) will be sufficient if you can say it with (property).
