Periodical Research Tutorial

4.1 Sample Search Results - SFX Option

When you are searching in a periodical index you will want to look for the SFX or FindText sign. Usually this is on the page with the details about a single article (called "detailed record"). In InfoTrac, you must go to almost the bottom of the detailed record to find this. When you click on SFX or FindText, you will go to a page that looks like this:

article.

Click on the red button to the left of each line to:

  • Link to the online full-text in another database (e.g., Lexis Nexis). Sometimes this will bring you directly to the article, sometimes you will then need to search for the exact issue and article you need.
  • Link to the library catalog to see print (paper) and microfilm options, and check "availability" to see if we own the date you need. Next locate the journal alphabetically on the second floor of the library.

If we do not own print or electronic, you will be offered the option of ILLiad, our interlibrary loan system. Follow this link to access forms where you can sign up for an ILLiad account and request that we obtain the article from another library. This process generally takes 1-2 weeks.

Caution: Not all databases work consistently with SFX, including InfoTrac OneFile, so remember to also try Determine if a Journal Title is Available.
