Reference Collection

The Reference Room houses a large general reference collection providing comprehensive reference and research materials in all subject areas. They include almanacs, background sources, biographies, citations & style guides, college and scholarship sources, country information, dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, handbooks & manuals, indexes, maps, quotations, and statistics sources. This collection contains almost 10,000 titles in about 20,000 volumes. The books are on open shelves, with the exception of Ready Reference titles, which are kept behind the Research Help Desk . A limited, but growing, number of reference products are available online.

Titles assigned to the reference or ready reference collections are so designated in the library catalog. To see if a specific title is available in either these reference collections, consult a reference librarian or use the "Advanced Search" feature of the library catalog; type the search phrase in combination with "limit by collection" to "Reference."

While reference books do not circulate, many titles have previous Editions and/or duplicate copies in the circulating collection or reference storage, which may be loaned. Consult a reference librarian.
