General Information
Special Collections houses two main collections of material:
-
The College Archives is comprised largely of records from the school's important 19th c. decades under Edward Austin Sheldon and documents sent by college offices and members of the college community ever since. Student publications, yearbooks, and Faculty publications contributed via the Display-To_Archives Program are housed here. Most of the archives is not accessible through the Library's online catalog, but there are on-site indexes and finding guides in the Barbara Palmer Shineman Special Collections Research Room. The College History guide can often help with initial research on SUNY College at Oswego and the Virtual Exhibits provides glimpses into SUNY Oswego's unique history. Some rare books are collected that support the study of early education and teacher training related to E.A. Sheldon's work; these rare books are cataloged in the library catalog.
-
The Local History Collection material includes manuscripts (city records, correspondence, diaries, etc.), oral histories, student local history research papers, maps, and published titles. The Millard Fillmore and Marshall Family Papers are two large collections that have national interest. Most of this Collection can be searched through the library catalog at a basic level, but on site guides and indexing give more detailed access. This guide for Local History can help you identify some of the best sources to start with, including published works available at many libraries. Selected documents are also featured in our Virtual Exhibits.
