| The Oswego State Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi is proud of it's many past, present, and future programs. Below are listed some of those programs, along with a brief description of each. For information about this year's programs, including scheduling information, please see the Meetings and Events tab. Past
Mock InterviewsMock Interview Night has become an annual tradition here at Oswego. Last year's program was a great success, with principals from Oswego, Wayne, Jefferson, and Onondaga Counties participating. The overall response from student participants was that they learned a lot about the interview process and felt much more confident and prepared going into Teacher Recruitment Days at SUNY Cortland.
Resumé and Portfolio WorkshopThe wonderful folks from Career Services have been gracious enough to help us with our resumé and portfolio workshops. Bob Capser came and talked about resumés, portfolios, and the interview process. Bob also talked about Teacher Recruitment Days and what students should be prepared for when they head to SUNY Cortland this April.
Guest SpeakersThis last year's guest speakers have included Dr. Dennis Parsons, who spoke about the Schools and Urban Society program, Dr. Harrison Yang, who spoke about integrating technology into our instuction by using WebQuests, and a Graduate Assisstant from the Education Advisement Office, who spoke about NYS Teacher Certification Exams and certification requirements. Cathy Crary and Ann Keen from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction spoke at out induction banquet, sharing their teaching experiences in words and song for our new inductees. Professor Crary lead our officers and new members in a candle lighting ceremony to celebrate their future in teaching. This year we have already had graduate assistants from the C&I advisement office to come talk about the changing requirements for certification, and the required workshop session course (CED 1020). We are working on lining up speakers on Urban Education, Project SMART, and other projects to come and speak at the spring semester meetings.
Panel DiscussionA new program this year, we will be holding a panel discussion on student teaching this December. Panelists from several areas will discuss their student teaching experiences and take questions from their fellow students. Hopefully, this will help students feel more comfortable and confidant when they enter the classroom for their own student teaching experiences.
KDP Leadership ForumIn April 2003, our Chapter was scheduled to host a Kappa Delta Pi Leadership Forum. Representatives from other chapters throughout the region were invited to attend. Several forums are held throughout the country each year. Unfortunately, the Forum had to be canceled due to the Ice Storm. We may consider trying to host an event in the future.
Community ServiceOne of the greatest strengths of our chapter in the past has been the willingness of its active and initiate members to take time out of their crowded schedules to give something back to the campus, or greater, community. In 2002, we were recognized by the LEAD Center as SUNY Oswego's "Outstanding Community Service Organization." Our members accounted for a total of more than 2400 hours of combined community service during the 2001-2002 academic year. The total for 2002-2003 is over 1500 hours! Please remember to keep documenting service! Although service is a membership requirement for this chapter, it was truly wonderful to see how many people went well above and beyond the required number of hours.
Annual Food DriveOne of the best-kept secrets of our Chapter is our annual food drive. The reason that this event is a "secret" is that we generally do it toward the end of the academic year. This has become a tradition here in Oswego, and is very important because although the food pantries receive may donations around Thanksgiving and Christmas, their shelves generally begin to look empty by early Spring. Last year, the volunteers at the pantry were in tears as they accepted almost two vans full of donations. This year we have already sent one carload and there is still a lot of food yet to be delivered. If you have donations they can be brought to any meeting or you can e-mail us to arrange a time for drop off.
Scholastic Book FairsThe book fairs serve several purposes here in our chapter. Above anything else, they are by far the biggest fundraising event that we do all year. However, they are not for raising funds alone. Working at the book fair is a good opportunity to spend time with your fellow chapter members, getting to know each other. Also, we are doing a service to the School of Education by bringing the books that so many students and teachers want to use in their classes right into the college.
